Pulleys with brake: progress capture pulleys

Pulleys are available with and without brakes. Pulleys with brakes are commonly used by riggers who work at height. The built-in brake systems are ideal for positioning and belaying. There are various types of pulley brake systems, of which the progress capture system is one of the simplest and most efficient ones. Progress capture devices have small teeth that only engage when the rope is moving the wrong way. The brake can be easily released, but is not built to be released under tension. Another brake system that is commonly used in professional rigging are cam style brakes. These pulleys are equipped with semi-automatic brakes that are engaged at a certain point through friction of the rope. These pulley brakes can be easily released with a lever.

Ropes and rope diameters for pulleys

When you’re using a height safety system, it is critical to follow instructions. As fall protection pulleys usually work with other rope types and diameters than hoisting pulleys, you should always check the ropes and rope diameters you’re using. Typically, personal height safety pulleys are compatible with rope diameters between 6 and 13 mm.
